Why it matters
Dental pain rarely improves on its own. An abscess can spread, and a knocked-out tooth can often be saved if it is re-implanted within an hour.
What to expect
A focused exam and X-ray, pain relief, and a temporary fix such as a dressing, antibiotic or splint — followed by a plan for the permanent repair.
Typical cost
Emergency exams typically run $100–$250 in the US and $90–$200 in Canada, before treatment such as extraction or root canal.
